Scope and Contents
The collection consists of letters from Barnum to his parents, sisters and brothers. Seven of the items are not written by George Barnum, Sr., of those seven, four are letters from George Stowits, one is called "general orders", one is called "general orders #66" and one is a "message to 24th corps from Major General John Gibbon."

Biographical / Historical
George G. Barnum, Sr. wrote letters home as he served in the Civil war. He was at Appomatox when Lee surrendered. Under order from General Grant, he delivered a wagon train of food to Confederate prisoners at Appomattox, Virginia. Barnum was one of the earliest residents of Duluth arriving in 1867, as a member of the first survey party. His business career involved early railroad and lake transportation followed by involvement in the grain industry; he was an incorporator of the Duluth Board of Trade. He owned the Barnum Grain Company; the town of Barnum, Minnesota was named for him, and his philanthropy was well known. He gave his monthly Civil war pension check to the Children's Home. Barnum was born in Buffalo, New York, October 10, 1843. He enlisted in the 100th Regiment, New York Volunteers from Buffalo. He served three years in the Civil war and retired as captain.
