The collection consists of eight items: three letters from George M. Smith, general agent, Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway; two letters from Mr. Ransom Metcalfe dated May 17, 1895 regarding the purchase of The Range; Duluth Boat Club family ticket, 1910; program booklet for the 4th Annual Bonspiel at Eveleth, Minnesota, 1923, and a program for the annual banquet of the Gilbert Curling Club, 1927.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Fredrick Barrett was born Nov. 5, 1843 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania. He served in the Civil War until Dec. 1892, released due to disability. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1866. He moved to the south and lived in New Orleans and Mississippi, marrying C.L. Redmond in 1874, and then lived in Washington D.C.  In 1887 he moved to Tower, Minnesota, purchasing the Tower Press, and established newspapers in Ely, Merritt, Virginia, and Biwabik.

Dr. Fredrick Barrett had four children, Fred, Fannie, George, and Corrie. Fred, the younger, was also a doctor and served seventeen terms as mayor of Gilbert, Minnesota, dying in 1931.
