Scope and Contents

The collection consists of Bartlett’s written histories of feminist organizations in Duluth and Superior that were not included in her book Making Waves (2016) and recorded interviews with women who played key roles in organizations that are included in the book. The documents are in PDF format, mostly consisting of essays about 5-10 pages in length. There is also a chapter length document on the University of Minnesota Duluth Women’s Studies program.

Biographical / Historical

Beth Bartlett has been a professor in Women's Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth since its beginnings in 1980. She also served as a faculty member in Political Science at UMD. She holds a BA in Philosophy from the College of Wooster, an MA in Political Science from Kent State University, and a PhD in Political Science from the University of Minnesota. Bartlett's research and teaching interests include feminist theory, ethics, spirituality, ecofeminism, and peace and justice.

Beth Bartlett is the author of a number books including Sarah Grimke's Letters on the Equality of the Sexes and Other Essays; Liberty, Equality, Sorority: The Origins and Interpretation of American Feminist Thought: Frances Wright, Sarah Grimke, and Margaret Fuller; Journey of the Heart: Spiritual Insights on the Road to a Transplant; and Rebellious Feminism: Camus's Ethic of Rebellion and Feminist Thought. Her most recent book is Making Waves: Grassroots Feminism in Duluth and Superior. Published in 2016, the book covers the histories of ten grassroots feminist organizations in the Twin Ports of Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin from the late 1970s into the 2010s. It describes the unique factors that influenced feminist activism in the area.
