Scope and Contents

The collection consists of outline and support research materials for application to “Research Grant for Beaver Bay”. It includes 31 black and white snap shots of Beaver Bay (bay, shore, approach, buildings, Trade Post Café, First Aid Station, Lapidary Shop, pier, highway, scenery); six page paper on Beaver Bay, Future Taconite Beneficiation Site, read at AGA meeting by L.C. Belthuis; two page history of the Beaver Bay Club 1920 – 1945; Reserve Mining Fact Sheet and History, 15 pages; news clippings; copies of maps. All of the materials are dated from 1947 or 1948 with the exception of one map dated 1940.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Lyda C. Belthuis and Dr. Thomas W. Chamberlin were newly appointed faculty in 1947, to the University of Minnesota, Duluth, Geography Department. Chamberlin came from Northern Illinois State Teachers College, Dekalb, where he had been since receiving his doctorate from Clark University. Belthuis came from the Charleston, Illinois teachers college after receiving her Ph. D. in geography from the University of Michigan. Both served as department heads in geography at UMD.
