Biographical / Historical
Blackthorn Theater was created in July of 1977. Founding members included Séamas Cain, Kelene Koval, Frank Jewell, Kai Johnson, Michael Zalar, Janet Carter, David Bryan Smith. Productions included avant-garde theater works, works of classical theater interpreted according to Twentieth Century visual–arts concepts, performance art works etc. Blackthorn Theater was defined as being as Imagist Theater, in which the making and presenting of image takes precedence over “acting.” There were frequent productions in Duluth from 1977 to 1983.
