Scope and Contents

In 1978 and 1979 historian Barbara Sommer interviewed residents of the Fond du Lac Reservation in Minnesota. The participants discussed and defined changes in the boundary of the Fond du Lac Reservation, MN. They also identified some changes in land use that occurred on the reservation and identified historic sites. The interviews include some spoken Ojibwe words and place names.

The collection consists of audiorecordings of the interviews and one volume containing the project's final report, including background information and bibliography, and transcripts of the interviews. The recordings have been digitized.

Please see individual entries for each interview; titles include participants' names and the name of the project. These interviews were originally restricted from general use from the date of the interview until January 1, 1994

Biographical / Historical

In 1978 and 1979 historian Barbara Sommer interviewed residents of the Fond du Lac Reservation in Minnesota. The project included interviews with James Blacketter Sr., Elizabeth Danielson, John Robert "Bob" DuFault, William D. "Dave" Savage, Mike Shabaiash, Susan Blacketter Shabaiash, Nancy Sorenson, Flora Whitebird, Frank Whitebird, and Simon Whitebird.

The participants discussed and defined changes in the boundaries of the Fond du Lac Reservation. They also identified some changes in land use that occurred on the reservation, and identified historic sites. The interviews include some spoken Ojibwe words and place names.

The primary purpose of the project was to obtain and record information available from the residents of the Fond du Lac Reservation concerning the changes in Reservation boudnaries since its establishment by the Treaty of 1854. Secondary purposes included obtaining information about specific land use changes on the reservation and general information about historic sites on or near the reservation. The project was undertaken by Beck and Associates on behalf of the Fond du Lac Reservation Business Committee.
