Scope and Contents

The collection contains delegate and information materials from the 1985 United Nations Women’s Conference in Nairobi, Kenya; a list of 1985-1986 talks and presentations given by Benson about the conference experience to named Duluth organizations; congratulations and thank you letters for speaking; and letters from Kenyan women. Benson was one of 40 Minnesota delegates to the conference.

The collection also includes documents and newspaper clippings related to Benson's work as a women's rights activist. Organizations represented include Advocates fro the E.R.A. and  National Organization for Women, 1978-1985; Council on the Economic Status of Women, 1981; and the Greater Minnesota Women's Alliance, 1981-1985, 1991.

Biographical / Historical

Joyce Benson graduated in 1980 from University of Minnesota Duluth in the Women’s Studies program (Interdisciplinary Studies/Women’s Studies). She is a long-time political activist and women’s advocate. She was a delegate to United Nations Decade for Women Conference in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1985, one of 40 Minnesota delegates: the only delegate from Duluth.

She ran for public office and served on Duluth City Council 1986-90. She organized women’s domestic violence and leadership trainings in Petrozavodsk, Russia and Kirovograd, Ukraine. She has been a member of League of Women Voters Duluth for 25 years. As International Relations Chair, she hosted women in Duluth from Guatemala, Brazil, Colombia, Russia, Ukraine, Tajikistan.
