Gust and Hanna Carlson family home photographs
Scope and Contents
The collection contains one bound volume of 53 exterior and interior black and white silver gelatin 8x10 photographs by L. P. Gallagher from 1941 of the Carlson house and furnishings at 202 North 24th Avenue East, Duluth, Minnesota, small hand-drawn floor plans of the basement and three floors, one 5x7 photograph of the house under construction with the workmen in 1910, and a detail of an undated photograph identified as architect Robert Lobecke. The Flemish style house, designed by architects Anton Werner Lignell and Robert Lobecke, was built in 1910 for $30,000. The photographs were compiled as a group by William D. Carlson a son of Gust and Hanna Carlson.

Biographical / Historical
Lars Gustaf "Gust" Carlson (1869-1956) was born in Amal, Sweden arriving in the United State in 1888 going directly to northern Michigan and its iron ore mines of the Gogebic range. He married Hanna J. Forsman (1877-1963) in Hibbing, Minnesota in 1896. They hired architects Anton Werner Lignell and Robert Lobecke to build a Flemish style house at 202 North 24th Avenue East, Duluth, Minnesota in 1910. William D. Carlson was their son.
Gust Carlson was the originator of Carlson Exploration Company and vice president of Merchants and Miners State Bank both in Hibbing. He owned and developed the Morton or Carlson mines on the Mesabi Range with George H. Crosby.
