Frank Bryant skating scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of one scrapbook of news clippings, frequently not dated, which chronicle Bryant’s skating career. Many Midwestern (Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Kansas City, Detroit) competitors and rinks are mentioned and race results given. The clippings are primarily from 1907 – 1915, one dated December 1926, mentions an attempted comeback. Photographs illustrate the album including 15 prints not glued into the album. There are two photographs of Bryant and his daughter, Gladys, age 19, who together entered a roller skating endurance contest in 1929. One folder of advertising handbills for various meets are in fragile condition. Names mentioned includ: Joe Munch, Frank Kendig, Raymond Kelly, E.J. Eckford, Harley Davidson, Walter Osmin.

Biographical / Historical
In 1913, Frank Bryant was named both national and world champion speed roller skater. On Dec. 1913, he defeated Roland Cioni of Italy in 2 of 3 five mile races. Bryant also held victories over Harley Davidson, the man Cioni dethroned. In 19 years of skating, Bryant set the world half mile record of 1 min. 32 seconds. He set a record in 1915 of skating more than 348 miles in 24 hours. He retired from skating in 1926 at age 27. Mr. Bryant was an employee of Union Towing and Wrecking Co., Duluth (Great Lakes Towing Co.) for 32 years, retiring in 1955.
