Biographical / Historical

Edward H. Burger and Jennie Viola Gabie were born in New York and married in 1879 in North Brooklyn, New York.  They lived in Duluth from about 1884 until 1900, living at 5523 London Road [1896] and 1120 East Third street [1900].  Sons Edward, Jr., and A. Irving remained in Duluth until 1904 and 1908.  After four years in North Carolina, Edward, Jennie and their daughter Ethel moved to California in 1904.  All of their children lived in California by 1908.

Duluth’s notable resident, reformer and women’s rights advocate, Sarah Burger Stearns (1836-1904), was the aunt of Edward H. Burger. Edward G. and William R. Burger each boarded with Judge Ozora and Sarah Burger Stearns from 1884-1890 at 1105 London Road. One presumes these men are family of Sarah. For a number of years, Sarah and Ozora Stearns wintered in California for Ozora’s health. They moved to San Diego, California in 1895 for the health of her husband, but Judge Ozora P. Stearns died there a year later. Sarah also died in California but, she and Ozora are buried in Duluth.
