The collection contains a copy of an 1880 “catalog of stocks, bonds, western lands, town lots and other real estate belonging to Jay Cooke and Co. in bankruptcy to be sold.” The collection also includes a business card, telegraph ciphers, copies of two notes, a catalog. The catalog is a typed copy; the original was borrowed from the Minnesota Historical Society.

Biographical / Historical

Jay Cooke and Company was a banking house designed to deal in bank notes, bills of exchange, stocks, commercial paper and deposits. It was formed in 1861 by financier Jay Cooke and William Moorehead. Cooke, responsible for revolutionizing the methods of marketing investments in the United States during the Civil War, visited Duluth, Minnesota in 1868. Cooke was important to the Duluth area primarily through his land and railroad properties; he owned the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company. Jay Cooke and Company went bankrupt in 1873.
