The collection consists of one scrapbook of newspaper clippings related to the Merritt v. Rockefeller case. 1894-1897. The clippings, dated from about 1894 to 1897, are from the Duluth News Tribune, Duluth Herald, Minneapolis Times, St. Paul Pioneer Press, and the Commonwealth.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Bell Cotton was an attorney for the Duluth, Missabe, and Northern Railroad, the Oliver Iron Mining Company and the Lake Superior Consolidated Iron Mines. He represented Rockefeller in the case of Alfred Merritt v. John D. Rockefeller. Cotton served as a State Legislator for St. Louis, Cook and Lake counties in 1893-1894.
