Biographical / Historical

A segment of individual Dulutians wanted the retired 716 foot battleship heavy Navy cruiser U.S.S. Des Moines to be placed in the Duluth harbor as a tourist attraction. The idea had supporters and detractors from 1995 until 1998. One issue was the minimum price tag of $14,000,000. Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson and Duluth Mayor Gary Doty supported the ship coming to Duluth. Duluth held a referendum in March 4, 1998 that drew 42% voter participation. The results were 60% opposed to 40% approved, and the idea was dropped. The proposal did not win in any polling precinct. The Coalition to Stop the Des Moines was a grassroots, ad hoc, group of area residents who wanted to stop the vessel coming to the harbor.
