Scope and Contents
The collection consists of information gathered by William Coventry for his book Duluth's Age of Brownstone. Included is background information about the brownstone quarries of the Duluth area including the Chambers and Fond du Lac quarries; photographs of Duluth buildings made of brownstone; Duluth Brownstone Co. correspondence; a biography on Michael Chambers; and information on the Bayfield and Portwing Quarries. There is information on the Merritt family church; a photocopy of The Building and Ornamental Stones of Wisconsin, 1898; information on quarries in the Lake Superior Region; the Traphagen house; Jacobsville Quarries; Endion Railroad Station; and 1 box of note cards for newspaper sources used in his book.

Biographical / Historical
William Dean Coventry was a physician, member of Nu Sigma Nu and Delta Upsilon, and a rower when a young man. He practiced medicine at the Duluth Clinic from 1929-1973. He served on the American College of Physicians and was president of the Minnesota Society of Internal Medicine. He is the author of the book Duluth’s Age of Brownstone, published by the St. Louis County Historical Society in 1987.
