Biographical / Historical

Born 1882 February 12, the last of six children, three girls and three boys. The Decker family was German, and lived in a German community in Evansville, Indiana. The children were taught German as a second language. Eloise went to Craggencroft for a postgraduate year after Evansville Girls' School. It was her final year of education. She studied Latin through Horace, rhetoric, and physics. The plan was for her to go to Smith College after Craggencroft, but reverses at home altered the plan and she returned home. She married Charles Foster Story on New Year's Eve 1903 in her family's home where she had been born. The couple moved to Syracuse, New York, and later Fayetteville. She reared a family of four, the marriage ended, and Eloise died in 1979.
