Biographical / Historical

Judicial district boundaries change over time. St. Louis County was in the second district from 1856-1858, the first district from 1858-1866, the seventh district from 1866-1874, and the eleventh district beginning in 1874. Currently the county is in the sixth judicial district.

The state's district courts hear all types of civil and criminal cases. District courts were established in Minnesota counties shortly after the formation and organization of each county. Duluth/St. Louis County has been the Eleventh Judicial District since 1874. Several counties were cut from the district in 1887, leaving Carlton, Cook, Lake, and St. Louis.
