The collection contains correspondence, subject files, and legislative files from Gary Doty's term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Correspondence files consist primarily of constituent correspondence; subject files include publications, reports, media releases, and memos; legislatve files contain bills correspondence, and personal notes.

Biographical / Historical

Gary Doty was born in Duluth, Minnesota in 1948. He graduated from Central High School in 1966 and received his B.S. in education from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1970. Doty was involved with a Youth Advocate Program, working with children from Correctional Institutions. Doty taught in the Duluth Public School system before his election to the Minnesota State House of Representatives in 1974. He served in the House for two years, 1975-1976, as a DFL representative; Doty also served as mayor of Duluth from 1992-2004.

His brother, Ralph Doty, also served in the Minnesota legislature.
