Biographical / Historical
Ralph Doty was born in Duluth, Minnesota. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of Minnesota, Duluth in 1963; his M.A. in education from the University of Notre Dame in 1965; and his D.Ed. from the Unviersity of Minnesota in 1968. Doty taught in the Duluth Public School system from 1965 to 1966 and served as an Administrative Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner of Education from 1967 to 1968. In 1968 he became associated with the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth as an associate professor of education. Doty retained this position until 1976, combining his political and academic careers.
In 1970 Ralph Doty was elected to the Minnesota State Senate from the sixty-first district in Duluth, Minnesota, as a DFL candidate. In 1972, due to reapportionment, he was re-elected to the State Senate from the Eighth District, which encompassed most of the old Sixty-first district. Ralph Doty served in the Minnesota Senate from 1971-1976. In September 1977 he assumed the presidency of the Ely Community College in Ely, Minnesota.
His brother, Gary Doty, also served in the Minnesota legislature and as mayor of Duluth.
