The collection contains correspondence, awards and certificates, lawyers' case records, news clippings, photographs, and manuscripts on local history. The collection also includes one photograph alubm of snap shots and post card photographs, 1909-1927 and not dated. Identified photographs in the album include Cass and Nett Lake Indian Reservations, logging scenes, log cabins, Big Falls, Little Fork, Indian Schools, Innes Lake, Star Island, Cass Lake Public School. It has been suggested that William Culkin took the pictures.

Biographical / Historical

William Edgar Culkin was a Duluth, Minnesota attorney and the first president of the St. Louis County Historical Society. He served as County Attorney of Wright County, Minnesota in 1886, as a Minnesota State Senator in 1894, and Register of the United States Land Office at Duluth in 1897. Culkin also served as director of the Minnesota War Records Commission, St. Louis County Branch, after World War I, and as president of the St. Louis County Historical Society in 1922. He was an avid local historian and also associate editor of the Duluth Herald newspaper.
