Biographical / Historical
The Duluth Boat Club was organized in 1886 for “the instruction and improvement of its members in rowing, sailing, and physical development, and also in social culture.” The club was financed largely by Julius Barnes who also served as president. The club became a leading sports and social center of Duluth until membership fell off in the late 1920s. Ed Mahoney, brother of J. D. Mahoney, was manager. In 1926, Barnes tried to sell Boat Club property. The club was reorganized in 1956.
