Scope and Contents

The collection contains programs, correspondence, photographs, reference materials, three scrapbooks, news clippings, account sheets and one film. The film (16mm, silent, 24 and 16 f.p.s.) contains black-and-white and color images of centennial activities and the parade. Reference materials include a 56 page centennial play entitled Duluth 100.

Biographical / Historical

The Duluth, Minnesota Centennial celebration was held August 3-12, 1956. Officers of the Centennial Commission included Ned Lewis, general chairman; Linnea Yonkers, women's events chair; James Kling, resident director.

Duluth was platted and named in 1856. It was not incorporated as a town until May of 1857. It was incorporated as a city in 1870. It reverted to a village in 1877, and was re-chartered as a city in 1887.
