Biographical / Historical

The Duluth Athletic Club was founded in 1936 as the Duluth Club changing its name a year later. The club building at 402 West First Street opened on December 31, 1937. The club's first officers were John Shambeau, Fred G. Wood, and Douglas Clark. Membership was limited to 450. Facilities consisted of a lounge, reading room, dining room, kitchen, office, meeting room, gymnasium, billiard parlor, shuffle board courts, handball court, squash court, showers and locker rooms. The building was destroyed by fire January 22, 1943. The DAC moved to the Lenox Hotel until a new building was constructed on the site of the old one. The new building opened in April, 1947. The building later housed the Chinese Lantern Restaurant, which burned in January, 1994. Past presidents include: William W. Crawford, Vern Hammerback, Donald Stalker, Percy Rascoe, Donald Baxter, Austin S. Ferguson, Hollis B. Rayn, Bardon Higgins, Ray Hall, William Mathison, James Courtney, L.M.
