Biographical / Historical
Chartered in 1935 as an independent, nonprofit organization, the Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau functions to attract the maximum number of visitors and infuse tourism dollars into the local economy. The Duluth Convention and Visitors Bureau establishes new initiatives to increase tourism, visitors and conventions, and continuously works to enhance the awareness of the visitor industry. Members are business people and interested Duluthians. A Board and Executive Committee lead the organization. An Executive Director supervises and manages the office and business affairs of the Bureau. The organization is now named Visit Duluth.
The Bureau was formerly a part of the Duluth Area Chamber of Commerce. That relationship changed in approximately 1981 when they separated. The Bureau’s function is very specific in its task to promote and market tourism related activity and magnets for the city of Duluth. Efforts are funded by tax revenue from hotel/motel accommodations and food/beverage transactions, as well as by private fund raising, membership dues and cooperative programs with the Minnesota Office of Tourism and other entities. It represents more than 450 businesses.
