Scope and Contents
The collection contains: a report of the West Duluth Fire Department requesting establishment of a fire alarm system, 1893; general orders to all or to specific fire houses, 1905-1940; letters to the Fire Department; a list of some firemen with their pay; and annual reports 1920-1921, 1923-1927, 1932, 1938; application blanks for the Duluth Firemen’s Relief Association; one microfilm reel of records, April 12,1887-December, 1917.
Records for Duluth Hose Company No. 1 include: Treasurer’s Report, 1888-1889; minutes, 1870-1889; a chronological Journal of Activities, 1896-1898, 1902-1905, and Journal of Expenditures and Receipts, 1885-1889.

Biographical / Historical
The Duluth Fire Department operated on a volunteer basis from 1870-1885. From 1885-1888, the City subsidized the Department, finally taking control in 1888. The Duluth Hose Company No. 1 began as a volunteer group. It later became part of the Duluth City Fire Department.
