Duluth Homestead Project records
Scope and Contents
The collection contains correspondence from the government regarding the Homestead Project, papers covering the incorporation of the association in 1939, a complete set of minutes of the association, financial records of the association, the refinancing of the association (liquidation of their government debt) in 1949, and the association’s dissolution in 1954. Also included are papers on the development of the locker plant and community store and the association’s contribution to the Hermantown School, for the Homestead Project, also known as the Jackson Project, provided an active nucleus of residents for the growth and development of the suburban community of Hermantown, Minnesota.

Biographical / Historical
The Duluth Homestead Project was begun under the United States Resettlement Administration of 1936. In 1939, the Duluth Homestead Association, Inc. was formed, its membership consisting of those who bought homes built as a part of the project. It was active in the development of Hermantown, Minnesota until its dissolution in 1954. The U.S. Government retained ownership of the project until refinancing in 1949 when the homesteaders liquidated their government debt.
Under the direction of the Duluth Homestead Association, Inc., two cooperatives, the Hermantown Community Store, Inc., and the Hermantown Locker Plant, Inc. were built. Strong support was also given to the development of the Hermantown School.
