Scope and Contents

The collection consists of yearbooks for the years 1935-1944 in nine bound volumes, lantern slides, and minutes. The yearbooks contain the constitution, bylaws, rosters, officers, and scientific papers read before the Society at monthly meetings. The lantern slides include a portrait of each of the eleven charter members and five slides of Duluth newspaper information extracted for May 9, 1935, the date of organization. Interestingly, one of the five newspaper extracts is the day’s horoscope: A day to cultivate creative ideas: An auspicious day for beginning any new project.

Biographical / Historical

The Society was founded in 1935 as a professional development organization for Duluth and area surgeons. Eleven charter members drew up a constitution, bylaws and meeting format patterned on the Minneapolis Surgical Society which three of the Duluth surgeons had recently attended. The participants met to give at least two scientific papers at each monthly meeting held from October through May. The annual meeting was held in May. A trained stenographer attended each meeting and later wrote up each paper and proceedings from shorthand.
