Biographical / Historical
One month after the vice-chairman of the Republican National Committee spoke in Duluth, Minnesota the Duluth Republican National Committee committee-woman, Mrs. Chris Carlson, proposed a Republican women’s organization in Duluth. Units in Hibbing, Eveleth and Chisholm had already formed. At the outset, the group stressed its purpose “to present an educational program for Republican women, and not to be used as a political pressure group, or to carry on any campaigning.” The group formed in August 1938, with elections in September. The organization was referred to by three names inconsistently: Republican Women’s Club, Duluth Republicans Women’s Club and Duluth Women’s Republican Club. Duluth's Women’s Republican Club was used on letterhead in the late 1940’s and appeared in the 1954 annual report and 1959 Constitution.
The organization's focus evolved to include supporting candidates and endorsing legislation; however, the club’s purpose is still stated “to encourage loyalty to the Republican Party and the ideals for which it stands; to promote a better understanding of politics and success at the polls.” More recent projects include support for candidate forums and voter registration drives.
