Duluth Public Schools Night Schools records

 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: S3688 Night Schools

Scope and Contents

The collection contains registration cards, attendance records, naturalization records and some grade information for students enrolled in the Duluth Public Schools Night Schools/Community Education program. Registration dates range from 1922 through 1965. Student registration information includes: name, address, telephone number, age, course subjects and school locations, occupation, and employer information. The earlier registration cards also include nationality, marriage status, children, years of residence in the United States and instructors' names. There is a considerable amount of variation in quantity and type of information provided for individual students. Some records include attendance information and teacher comments, some students have cards from a number of successive years stapled together, some forms are filled out completely while others include only minimal information.

Locations for night school classes are noted as "School Buildings" on the registration cards. More than thirty-five locations are represented, including non-school locations such as the YWCA and the West End Library. A large number of students took courses in English, Citizenship, and Naturalization, especially in the 1920s through the 1940s. Later years saw an expansion of subjects including Arts and Crafts, Civil Defense, and Holiday Sales Training.
