Biographical / Historical

Dr. Karl W. Emanuel arrived in Duluth in 1930. He was an intern at St. Luke’s hospital in that year, but by 1931 was at the Webber Hospital and Clinic. Webber Hospital was a 48-bed West Duluth (5601 Grand Avenue) facility founded in 1926 by Dr. Edwin E. Webber that closed in December, 1944. Dr. Emanuel described himself as a founder of the West Duluth Clinic that subsequently occupied a portion of the Webber building. The West Duluth Clinic building (former Webber) was purchased in September 1947, by Arrowhead Health Center, Inc., as a non-profit, and physicians not part of the AHC could use the building. Dr. Emanuel resided in West Duluth. His 1982 tape describes his background, college education, organizations he was involved in including the Duluth Symphony. Dr. Emanuel died in Duluth in 1988. His spouse was Dorothea Alice Emanuel who died in Duluth in 1995.
