This collection contains papers pertaining to the history of the Mesabi and Vermilion Iron Range mines and mining companies, photographs of mine sites, drill holes, equipment and workers, newspaper clippings and advertisements from the Almar Iron Mining Company, and two letters about the Board of Trade.

Biographical / Historical

Hansen Evesmith was originally named Hansen Eve Smith, but because his spoken name sounded like Hansen Evesmith, many people believed this was his name; therefore, he changed his name to Evesmith. He was active in exploration of the iron lands in both the Vermilion and Mesabi Ranges of Minnesota from 1892-1903. He was an assistant to Cassius Merritt, serving him as Treasurer of the Duluth Mesabi and Northern Railway Company. Evesmith was a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and founder of the Zenith Coal Company in North Dakota.
