Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one letter written in Washington, D. C. from Egan to Clinton Markell of the Duluth City Council.  He mentions being in Philadelphia for two days "urging…upon William Fellon and Jay Cooke the great necessity and importance of immediate construction of docks for the Northern Pacific railroad…" as well as construction of a dike.

Biographical / Historical

The Honorable James Jay Egan first came to Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin in May 1869 as an advance agent of the Northern Pacific railroad after serving as a legislator in Ramsey County, Minnesota. He was one of two attorneys in the fledgling city of Duluth. He served in Duluth's first administration as city attorney.
