Biographical / Historical
Dr. Thomas Foster was born in Philadelphia on May 18, 1818. Originally trained as a physician, he later abandoned medicine for a career in the editorial profession. Foster was the editor of the first newspaper published in Duluth, Minnesota, the Minnesotian. In a speech on July 4, 1868 he is credited with first referring to Duluth as the "Zenith City of the unsalted seas." He died in San Francisco in 1901.
