Biographical / Historical
The Friday Club was founded in Duluth, Minnesota in October 1915 “to study the world’s best literature.” In November the first book review program was presented. Initially members were women of the Lakeside area, but later the neighborhood restriction was removed. Membership was limited to 25 with five associate members. By 1965, only 85 women had belonged to the Club with an average length of membership of 35 years. An annual meeting is held each spring. Usually two members collaborate on one book, but occasionally two members review separate books. A general theme is chosen each year and is developed through various forms: poetry, fiction, plays, and essays.
