Biographical / Historical
The Friends of Tweed was founded in 1969, as a non-profit organization to promote the development of the Tweed Museum of Art at the University of Minnesota-Duluth as an educational and cultural resource serving the needs of the university and the surrounding community. The Friends provided volunteer services to the museum, engaged in fund raising projects to finance its own operations and to purchase gifts of art for the museum collection. The Friends initiated activities and projects designed to stimulate wider and deeper interest in the visual arts.
Membership in the Friends was open to anyone willing to pay nominal annual dues ($2.00) and be a Museum Patron of the Tweed ($5.00) or pay one of the other membership levels offered. It appears the membership was composed primarily of women.
The Friends disbanded in 1986, some months following museum reorganization under a new director.
