Scope and Contents

The collection consists of snapshots, and a few postcards, that document Amanda Geipel’s 15-day trip with family to the Basswood Fishing Lodge at Ely, Minnesota. They canoed and portaged from Basswood Lake to Crooked Lake at the Canadian border. Identified place-names in the images include Basswood River, Basswood Upper and Lower Falls, Pictured Rocks, Rebecca Falls, Curtain Falls, and Basswood Lodge among others. There are two snapshots of the interior of lodge rooms. There are snapshots of packs and gear, meals being eaten, paddling canoes, fishes caught, a man guide called Mose, and three snapshots of an unidentified Ojibwe family with children and their pet dogs and cats.

Biographical / Historical

Amanda Margaret Geipel was born and lived in Chicago for most of her life working for Illinois Bell Telephone Company. After retiring she moved to Three Oaks, Michigan to be near her sisters. She died at age 85 in a nursing home in Bridgman, Michigan survived by her three sisters and a brother. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
