Biographical / Historical

The Fitger Brewing Company was the oldest continuously operating industry in Duluth at the time of its closing in September 1972.  From 1881, when it located at the present site on East Superior Street, to 1911, 15 buildings were constructed to expand the business from the 29th to the 4th largest brewery operating in Minnesota. Five men: Michael Fink, August Fitger, Percy S. Anneke, John Beerhalter, Sr. and Jr., owned, expanded, innovated and maintained the brewery creating markets throughout northern Minnesota and adjacent states for its beer, near-beer, soda pop and candy bar products.  The company ceased operations rather than invest in pollution control equipment in the face of highway expansion which looked like it would level the site.  The final batch of beer was made in May, 1972.
