Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 16 photographs of homes in Duluth and five undated, color elevation drawings of four residences and the Peoples Bank. The photographs are of; 1727 Lakeview Drive, one exterior and 5 interior; the Louis S. Loeb home at 2407 East 5th Street, an exterior view; the C.M. Heimbach home at 2430 East 2nd Street, four exterior shots, three of them construction shots; and four unidentified photos all of the same residence, all exterior shots. All of the photographs appear to be the work of Hugh McKenzie. All but one are on mounts, all are black and white and approximately 8 x 10.

Biographical / Historical

Francis H. Fitzgerald (1880-1965), was an architect whose work is still visible in Duluth. Born in Scotland May 28, 1880, he was educated and held diplomas and certificates from the Royal Institute of British Architects, the London Institute of Technology, and the Technical Schools of South Kensington, London. He came alone to the United States in 1907, and was employed for a time as an architectural engineer at Martin’s Ferry, Ohio. He was an architect’s assistant to the firm of Janssen & Abbot in Pittsburgh and at Chicago with Shepley, Rutan & Collidge, and also with Jarvis Hunt and D.H. Burnham & Company of Chicago. In 1913 he came to Duluth and a year later opened an office for himself in the Alworth Building.
