Administrative History:

Elizabeth deCourcy Greene was born in Brooklyn, New York. A long-time Duluth resident, she worked for the St. Louis County Historical Society from 1954 to 1967. She returned to the east coast in 1969, and died in New Milford, Connecticut in 1980 at age 70. In 1942, she married Josiah E. Greene (born 1911 in Duluth; a writer who died in 1955 at age 44). His parents were St. Louis county attorney, Warren Earl Greene, who left Duluth for the east coast in 1928 due to fragile health, and died in 1937, and Katherine W. Ensign Greene, daughter of Duluth's Judge Josiah D. and Rose (Watrous) Ensign, president of the village of Duluth and later mayor. Katherine was librarian at the Duluth State Normal School until she married in 1907. Warren Earl Greene was an attorney involved with the 1920 Duluth lynchings. It is not known if Elizabeth Greene knew her husband's father, Warren Earl Greene, directly.
