The collection contains photocopies of letters written by Hall. The originals are located at the Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, Minnesota. The collection also includes a typewritten copy of the letters produced by the St. Louis County Historical Society in 1925.

Biographical / Historical

Sherman Hall was a Congregational clergyman and missionary. He established a mission of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in 1831 at La Pointe, a fur trading post located on Madeline Island in Lake Superior. He learned the Chippewa language and was responsible for many translations, including a Chippewa translation of the New Testament. Hall retired to a small farm in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota in 1854 and remained there until his death.
