Scope and Contents

The collection contains a published copy of the Origin and Development of Comptrollership in Iowa; a typed copy of his dissertation The Iowa State Comptroller; Rep. John Blatnik’s speeches (copies) to the 80th congress and miscellaneous others, 1947–1948; Blatnik’s radio speeches (copies) 1947–1948; and five volumes of teaching materials for courses taught by Hargrave. Scrapbooks compiled by Anne Hargrave spanning 1911–1980 were microfilmed at Brandeis University and a copy provided for this collection.

The collection includes a transcript of an April, 1947 "Radio Talk" regarding the Taft-Hartley Act. The discussion includes then Rep. John F. Kennedy, Rep. John Blatnik, and Lewis G. Hines AFL legislative representative at the time.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Roger James Hargrave taught political science at the Duluth State Teacher’s College in the late 1940s. In 1946 he became active in the Duluth, Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party party. While active in the DFL he was active in the campaign of John A. Blatnik. He ultimately went to Washington,  D.C.  for eight years as Blatnik’s legislative assistant, in which capacity he did much of Blatnik’s speech writing. Hargrave returned to Duluth in 1954 and practiced law until 1980.
