Scope and Contents

The collection contains letters to Kate Harris from Jennie S.S. Richardson, concerning Richardson's 1897 honeymoon trip in a birchbark canoe from Burntside Lake, near Ely, Minnesota, to Lake Agnes, in Cook County. Also included are eight photographs of the trip, William H. Richardson's pamphlet Honeymoon in a Birch-Bark Canoe describing the trip, and Kate Harris' letters to the St. Louis County Historical Society about the collection materials.

The pamphlet describes the guides speaking in Ojibwe and includes some Ojibwe words as well as a description of food cooked for the Richardson's by one of the guides. The photographs depict the Richardsons, some of their traveling companions, the Ojibwe guides for the trip and Martin Pattison's cabin on Burntside Lake. Some photographs include Ojibwe names for the individuals pictured. Individuals in the photographs include Joe and Mary Boshey, William and Jennie Richardson, and two Ojibwe children, including one in a cradleboard.

Biographical / Historical

Administrative History: Kate M. Harris lived in the vicinity of Ely, Minnesota. She started a school there, on the south side of Burntside Lake, in about 1917. Her pupils were children of the nearby homesteaders and the Boshey family. Kate Harris and her husband most likely became acquainted with William and Jennie Richardson when they came to Burntside Lake in 1897 to begin their honeymoon trip.

Jennie S.S. Richardson worked as a school teacher in Superior, Wisconsin. Martin Pattison's three older children were her students and eventually she moved in to the Pattison home. Her wedding to William H. Richardson in 1897 took place in the Pattison home.

William H. Richardson wrote an account of a canoe trip in the Ely, Minneosta area that the Richardson's took in 1897, Honeymoon in a Birch-Bark Canoe.
