The collection consists of Hearding's journal containing copies of letters, reports, statistical data, and similar information relating to his career, including surveys of the Great Lakes. The collection includes the original journal, comprised of one volume and a folder of loose pages, and a microfilm copy of the journal, in one reel.

Biographical / Historical

William H. Hearding was born in England in 1826. He immigrated to the United States in 1847. In 1851 Hearding was appointed Assistant Engineer to the U.S. Corps of Engineers in their survey of the Great Lakes, assigned to the Lake Survey Office in Detroit. He did surveying of Lake Superior in the Duluth-Superior area. Hearding died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1893.
