Scope and Contents

The collection contains two folders of papers, one of personal papers (1905-1964) itemized below, and one of employment records, local and state health department reports, and correspondence (1904-1941). Folder two holds December 30, 1927 letters about "disposal of dairy products from the Louis Jacobson farm in Cotton Township where a typhoid fever case developed."

There is one scrapbook of newspaper clippings on Milk Inspection and milk regulations (1904-1955).

Biographical / Historical

Grand Rapids Herald-Review July 9, 1964 obituary described him as an ardent outdoorsman and conservationist.

Gust Hedman was born in Falun, Sweden May 26, 1874, and came to Duluth in 1897. He first worked for the Alger Smith Logging company. He was hired March 1, 1906 as Sanitary and Contagious Inspector of the health department reporting to the Director of Public Health, Dr. L. A. Sukeforth, M.D. He was promoted to Milk & Dairy Inspector in April 1912, a post he held 47 years until his retirement. In a 1934 Minnesota Department of Health Division of Sanitation Report on the Milk Laboratory at the Duluth Health Department, Novebmer 22, 1934, he is also referred to as Deputy Inspector or the State Department of Agriculture, Dairy and Food. Hedman was considered an authority on sanitation for dairy products, and his program and laboratory techniques were used throughout the nation.

He was President of the Swedish American League and returned to Sweden in 1937 for a holiday. A poet and author, Mr. Hedman wrote and produced several plays in Swedish depicting the rural life in Sweden and Minnesota.

He was buried in Oneota cemetery near his wife Anna who preceded his death by about twenty years. They had seven children.
