Biographical / Historical
The Hudson's Bay Company received its royal charter from King Charles II in 1670. This charter granted the Company a monopoly in all commerce within the territories known as Rupertsland, i.e. lands which drain into the Hudson Bay. This charter also authorized the Hudson's Bay Company to exercise full sovereignty in Rupertsland. At its height, the Hudson's Bay Company ruled 1,400,000 square miles. In 1869, the Company was forced to sell their holdings to Canada for 300,000 pounds sterling. However, Hudson's Bay Company has continued to operate as an ongoing commercial enterprise.
