The collection consists of two carbon copy documents by Rukard Hurd: A Valuation of the Developed Tonnage of the Great Northern Ore Properties as of April 1, 1912 (7 pages); Hurd Appraisal of Iron Ore the Present and Future Value per Ton in the Ground Together with the Present and Future Value per Ton in the Ground of Operating Profit on Leased ore and Ore Value Tables for Various Interest Rates and Ore Exhaustion Periods and Base Unite Price Tables (36 pages, covers approximate dates 1901-1912)

Biographical / Historical

Rukard Hurd was director of the Department of Mines and Natural Resources of the Minnesota State Tax Commission. He was the first secretary of the Commission, elected in April 1907, and became the director in 1915. While secretary of the Tax Commission Hurd was in charge of iron-ore mineral development. He was the author of the Iron Ore Manual a general reference book on iron ore costs and values of mineral leases. Hurd was a member of the the Minnesota state legislature in 1901 and served in the special tax session of 1902.

Rukard Hurd was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1858. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Military College in 1878, as a civil engineer, and in 1912 received an honorary Ph.D. from the college.
