Albertine Johnson oral history interview
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of three audio recordings of interviews with Albertine Johnson. The interviewer was her son, Rudy Johnson. Interviews took place on September 7, 1977 and May 7, 1978.
Tape 1: 1886-1917 Describes living conditions among fisherfolk in North Norway, going to school, church life, folk culture, etc., and work in Kerkenes 1914-1917, and emigration to the United States.
Tape 2: 1917-1925 Reasons for emigration, the crossing (1917), immigrant life in Thomson (Carlton County, Minnesota), 1917-1920 during the Armistice, the Great Cloquet Fire, the Flu epidemic, and early years in West Duluth in the immigrant community.
Tape 3: 1925-1978 Factory work in Duluth in the 1920’s, domestic work in the 1930’s, naturalization, retirement. (side two mostly family history).

Biographical / Historical
Albertine Svendsen Johnson immigrated from Norway to the United States in 1917, settling initially in Carlton County, Minnesota. She married to Ivar Johnson in 1915 and was the mother of former University of Minnesota Duluth Library Director Rudy Johnson. Her husband died in Duluth, Minnesota in 1921
