Scope and Contents
The collection contains topic and research files compiled by Ms. Hyvarinen on a wide range of subjects. Architectural notes of downtown Duluth include a script for a walking tour from 5th Avenue West to 5th Avenue East. Many places and properties from 35th Avenue West to 60th Avenue East merit interest. Labor history, local political issues such as the freeway expansion, biographical files on Duluthians, library programs, the Minnesota Radicalism Project of the Minnesota Historical Society, and personal and political interests are reflected in the variety of subjects including her designation as a delegate to the Democratic national convention in Atlanta in support of Jesse Jackson’s campaign for president in the Rainbow Coalition. Clippings, notes, brochures, DFL convention materials and miscellaneous items depict additional interesting topics.

Biographical / Historical
Virginia Dunn Hyvarinen came to International Falls, Minnesota from Detroit, Michigan in the early 1960's and to Duluth in 1966. A librarian with a specialty in local history, she retired from her Community Services post at the Duluth Public Library in 1988 and moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts. Always a political activist in pursuit of social justice and equality, she was a public servant on many boards and organizations as diverse as the NAACP, arts organizations, and St. Louis County Historical Society.
