The collection contains circulars, filing statement and maps of legislative district from Wells’ 1956 campaign for 57th Congressional District; text of a speech she gave as Vice President of Voyaguer’s National Park Association, 1968 and a statement of recognition of her work for this association; the statement of appointment to the governor’s commission on the Status of Women, 1965; conference program for and newspaper clippings announcing the Duluth Bi-Annual Conference on the Status of Women, 1966; and photocopies of news clippings from her scrapbook, circa 1954-1965.

Biographical / Historical

Ingrid Wells was born Ingrid Kainu in Crosby, Minnesota. She graduated from the St. Cloud Teachers College. At the end of World War II she moved to Duluth, Minnesota with her husband Ward Wells where she lived for 50 years. At the end of her life she lived in Rochester, Minnesota. In many of her life's activities she defied traditional limitations based on her gender.

Ingrid Wells taugth at Washburn Elementary in Duluth, and beame active in the Democratic Farmer Labor in 1954 when she joined the "Women for Humphrey" campaign supporting Hubert Humphrey's re-delection to the U.S. Senate. Ingrid Wells ran for a Minnesota House of Representatives seat in 1956 and was 8th District chairwoman for the DFL in the early 1960s.

Ingrid Wells served as postmaster in Duluth from 1963 to 1965. She also served as Treasurer of the Townview Improvement Corporation, 1969-1982, and served on the board of the Seaway Port Authority, 1976-1984, the first woman to serve in that role, becoming President of the Port Authority in 1979 she was the first woman in the nation to head a Great Lakes port. Ingrid Wells also served on the Duluth Planning commission and the Duluth Economic Planning Committee.
