Erling Jonassen oral history interview
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of digital recordings of interviews of Erling Jonassen by Stephanie Hemphill conducted in November 2008, focusing on his World War II experiences. In addition to these recordings the collection includes a printed transcript of the interviews (9 pages), a digital copy and printed transcript (3 pages) of a Minnesota Public Radio program by Stephanie Hemphill featuring Erling Jonassen, and digital copies of photographs provided by Mr. Jonassen. Scanned copies of the print transcripts can be found on disc 5.

Biographical / Historical
Erling Harold Jonassen (b. May 5, 1919) was a soldier during World War II, serving in the Philippines from 1941-1944. After the Japanese invasion of the Philippines and the evacuation of the islands by General Douglas MacArthur, Jonassen, along with a handful of other American soldiers and civilians hid in the jungles of the Phillipines spying on the Japanese and fighting them as part of a little know insurgency.
