Scope and Contents

The collection consists of 8x10 contact sheets of Walter Kamphaus' 4x6 negatives. The archives holds copies only, the original photographs are retained by the family. The images are of scenes and events in recent Duluth history. Subjects include: a whaleback pulling barges, parades, the incline railway, Fond du Lac dam, Melrose Avenue 1927 – 1930, 48th Avenue East and Cooke St., Miller Creek, Miller Home, Contagious Hospital 14th Ave. West and 3rd (since razed), Ford Tri-Motor airplane on the frozen lake, residence, and others.

Biographical / Historical

Walter Theodore Kamphaus was born in Minnesota and reared in Duluth from a young age. As a young person he developed an interest in amateur photography. He was employed as a printer with the Duluth News Tribune for many years.  Mr. Kamphaus had thousands of photographs in chronological sequence in albums.
